Today is such a fun day, as I get to share Layla’s bedroom makeover reveal!  A few weeks ago, I shared the plans for adding a few new touches to Layla’s room to give it a more fun and playful feel.  This makeover is one of my new favorites because Layla did it with me! She wanted to incorporate cats in her space but wanted an overall feeling of being at the beach.  With this in mind, we decided upon the theme of “cats but make it coastal” for her fresh bedroom design.

Fresh white slate:

We have already painted the walls a bright and crisp white called “Fresh Kicks” by Clare Paints. We then had a feature wall installed, with a floor to ceiling vertical board wall behind her bed.  Her larger furniture pieces we purchased over last summer all stayed and we then brought in a few new decorative pieces and a gorgeous new rug.

Color Scheme:

I found the perfect wall art on Etsy and we pulled all the colors for the room from this.  It is full of blues, pinks, and teal. Rugs can increase the visibility of color schemes in a room’s design! With Layla’s rug, I pulled out one of the blue tones from the art piece to add a pop of color to the space. I carried the pink out through the bedding and the cat bubble art over the dresser.  Finally, I added pops of teal throughout the space with picture frames and a quote art piece we picked up in Hawaii when Layla was just 2 years old.

 Furniture choices:

Layla really loved Cora’s bed but preferred a different color. We opted for the gorgeous Jenny Lind bed from Crate & Kids in black, which pops nicely against the wall.  I think this color is one that will grow with her and transition great into new spaces as she gets older. The desk area received a mini makeover as well!  We kept the same desk and swapped out the art that was on the wall for a large round brass mirror. This area will serve as a quiet place for homework in years to come as well as a fun vanity space.

Achieving less visual clutter was a significant goal of my own for Layla’s  room.  Seven year olds can gather a lot of junk… I mean stuff.  Layla wants to keep every little paper and knick knack she finds.  I surprised her with a new nightstand that has three drawers and told her she can keep all of her “stuff” in there.  If it becomes full, she has to purge. She liked that idea.  While decluttering, we opted to remove all toys from her room and take them to the playroom.  Ultimately, I want her room to be a place to rest, read and recharge.

Textiles:

I wanted to have fun with the bedding and textiles in her room.  We ended up with a good variety of patterns and textures on the bed.  Mixing patterns can be tricky but with the white walls as a backdrop I knew it wouldn’t be too overwhelming to add in a handful as long as they all blend into the color scheme.  We have these super cute white with navy cat head sheet set as the base.  Layered over this is a white comforter and a beautiful coral pink quilt and shams.  Bringing the pale blue from the rug up through some budget friendly throw pillow covers and finishing it off with the cutest black sequin cat pillow!

The goals for Layla’s bedroom were realized in the most authentic way possible, and the best part of the entire project was working on it with my girl by my side.  I loved seeing my oldest become excited and be creative piecing it all together.  The room is more mature, yet still envelops a playfulness that allows her personality to shine through!
