Art Series, Week 1: Custom Frames

A great way to achieve a designer look on a budget is to utilize print shops who sell downloadable art and have it framed to fit your needs. I have done this a few times in our home. Digital downloads can cost you anywhere from $3 - $25. Once you find and download your perfect piece of art, it can be easily uploaded to a framing site to have printed and installed into a custom frame of your choosing.

I like to use Frameiteasy.com for my custom framing needs. I have used them in the past for a few pieces, including the large landscape in the office. This week I am teaming up with them to print and frame some pieces for our family room (bonus room) over our garage. Art is the final thing I need to finish the space and I’m excited to share with you what I chose!

I am running through a step by step guide to get a digital art piece custom framed!

Step 1:

The first step toward custom framing is to choose what you wish to frame. You can do art or personal photos. With Frame It Easy you can also choose to order a frame empty and fill with you own prints later down the line. For this project, I chose this cloud piece from Etsy, and this meadow flowers set of prints from Juniper Print Shop.

Step 2:

Measure your wall space and decide on a size for your art. Keep in mind the frame and matte (if you use one) will add some length and width to the piece. For over our sofa, I wanted a long and narrow art piece. Finding a frame to fit this would be very difficult, which is why I love the custom sizing option.

Step 3:

Go to frameiteasy.com and upload your art or photo you wish to have framed. Enter in the measurements of the print and follow along in the steps to decide on a frame style, color, type of matte and acrylic cover. (See below for the options I chose.) Keep in mind, when choosing an art size in step one on the site, this is the size of the print, not including the matte or frame. If you click “details” it will give you the overall measurements with the frame and matte options you choose.

Step 4:

Order your frames and wait patiently for them to arrive!

Step 5:

Your frames will arrive ready to hang with your art prints already in place. They also supply hanging hardware to use. You will be able to hang your art straight out of your box, easy peasy!
