Coastal & Playful Girls Bedroom Plans
I am excited to head back into Layla’s room and finish what we started 6 months ago. Last summer, we began a room makeover to give Layla a fresh and more mature space. The room design wasn’t going together like I thought and never really felt quite right. Every time I walked past her room, I just felt like something was off. The mixture of textiles, wall colors, and furniture just didn’t work for me. Layla wasn’t too excited about her room either. And I will admit . . . I think I was trying to force a more “me” type space onto her and it was a big FAIL. I had decided to step away and never really finished the space. Here we are 6 months later, and Layla and I are both ready to make a few changes to get her room to be a space we are both proud of!
This collaborative project sprouted an opportunity for us to plan, shop, and bond during this transformation. With the goal of creating a mature room just for her, a freshly empowered Layla was asked to share her own ideas of what all she might like to change, colors she would love to see in her new space, and any other design elements she’d like to implement.
Out with the old, in with the new! Layla’s requested “cats but make it coastal” as the theme of the design. She also really wanted a fun accent wall. We plan to bring in blues, accents of pink, cats (duh!) and a light and bright coastal feel.
We have already painted the walls a bright and crisp white called “Fresh Kicks” by Clare Paints. We plan to add a fun accent wall behind her bed by adding a floor to ceiling vertical board moulding. Her larger furniture pieces we purchased over the summer will all stay and we plan to incorporate new decorative pieces along with a new rug.
With Layla as my wingwoman, I have put together two mood boards for the new design. They are very similar with a few slight differences. There are five design decisions to be made; the rug, the smaller side table, lamp vs. sconce, to wallpaper or not to wallpaper, and the desk chair. The pillows and small decorative pieces on the dresser may change along the way before the final reveal.
Option 1
For the first option, I brought it a more neutral rug with a playful design. It’s an off white and gray rug that will give a nice jumping point for the room. Over the bed, Layla chose a beautiful coastal landscape in her favorite colors. This cat wallpaper is a fun accent that we would add to the small wall behind her desk and mirror. It’s a peel and stick wallpaper that would be easy to remove down the road. For a way to carry the black of her bed over to another corner, I added this black chair at her desk. A fun round side table would be a good option on the left side of her bed to mimic her white nightstand on the right. A cute pink lamp to add some color would sit on the nightstand.
Option 2
In the next option, I brought in more color in the rug. I found this gorgeous blue rug and I knew it had to be an option. The art is all the same as in option 1. This time, I opted for no wallpaper behind the desk along with a more coastal rattan side table and a black and white riviera chair at the desk.
Bedding
Like I mentioned above, the textile choices may change down the road than the ones below on the design board. One piece that won’t change is the bed sheets. I found this adorable sheet set with navy cat heads and knew they were perfect for Layla. When I told her they were part of Ellen Degeneres home decor line she squealed with excitement! Ellen and Cats? Win Win!
We are both excited to work towards finally finishing this space! It will definitely be a fun and playful room while still mature enough for her to grow into for years to come. What choices do you think Layla will pick for the items still up in the air? We will soon find out! I’ll be sharing as we make the changes over on my Instagram page, @simplysingharath, so be sure to follow along!
