Shelf Styling 101

One of the most troublesome areas people struggle to style are shelves. Whether you have built-ins, floating shelves, or a bookcase it can be daunting if you are unsure where to start with decorating them. I am happy to share some tips I follow when styling shelves. If you follow these guidelines, I am hopeful you will feel more confident to tackle shelf styling on your own!

Color Scheme

First and foremost, you will first want to narrow down a color scheme you plan to use. I like to stick to 2-3 colors or tones to help keep a cohesive look. Go through your items and see what repeating colors are there. In the example below, I went for a very neutral look and used a variety of white, creams and natural tones. Try to keep a neutral base with tans, whites, or grays and layer in an accent color. such as green or blue.

Layout

You want there to be balance among the shelves and each one to vary slightly. You can do this by mixing larger single items with a grouping of smaller pieces. Some shelves will have 2 or 3 groupings while others will have just one. Incorporating varying heights and shapes is important as well. In the image below, you can see a variety of groupings and height to help keep visual interest. Stack some books under a vase or box to add height and variety. The last thing you want to keep in mind when doing your layout is to alternate sides when placing like items. I am showing below how I spaced the books in a zig-zag pattern down the shelves. You would want to do this with your accent color as well.

Additional Tips:

  • Use a variety of objects to add interest and texture, including a few unique pieces like bone beads, driftwood or a chain link.

  • Picture frames and art are a great way to add visual appeal.

  • Choose your must have items first and fill in the rest around them.

  • Add in sentimental items if you so choose.

  • Real or faux plants are a great way to add color and texture.
