What a world of uncertainty we have experienced over the last five months. I am so thankful for our one constant in our life, home. One challenging decision that has affected so many families is whether to send their children to school or keep them home. Let me first say, that there is no right or wrong choice. Every family had to make a choice that was best for them. For our family, we made the choice to keep our girls home. At first, I thought, “Oh, that is an easy decision. They are definitely staying home!” But as school was approaching , I couldn’t help but feel guilty I was keeping them away from the in-class experience.

I decided that the school year will be what we make it. If we choose to be negative and sad about it, then it will be a long, sad school year. But I am choosing to make it a fun year, the year the girls get to stay home with mommy and “work from home” like daddy. In order to make our school year more successful, I thought it would be fun to create a homeschool and craft area in the corner of our playroom.

After a little switch-a-roo, two desks that originally faced each other to function as a large art space, were assigned their own private little space.   The Ikea Alex cabinet in the middle offers so much storage for all of our art supplies.  I had purchased the Ikea shelves a while back for another project and never ended up using them.  A little spray paint on the brackets and they are perfect for above the desks to free up space for all of the crazy crafting that is about to take place! The decor I chose mimics some of the familiarity of a traditional classroom setting while integrating thoughtful pieces that still feel like home.

I found the cutest classroom calendar set on Amazon to use in our cozy corner. I thought this would be an exciting way to start each day together before Layla goes off to eLearning with her online teacher. Amazon had a variety of color choices for school room calendars and decor, but I decided to keep it a little neutral with blacks and whites. The colorful butterflies I added to make this a playful space tie in well with the ABC chart wrapped around the corner. We also can’t forget to note the adorable kitten lamps we found at Target.  They add a playful touch while still being neutral and my favorite color, white!

Overall, I am pretty happy with the space turned out! Better yet, the girls think its so perfect and already ask to use the space to do the morning calendar and weather routine each morning!

Wishing you all a healthy and enjoyable school year!
