PLAYROOM & TOYS

As much joy as toys brings to your children, they likely brings nearly as much stress to you when they are scattered throughout the house. Whether you store your toys in your child’s bedroom, a playroom, or in random places around the home, it is important to have a system in place to help tame the chaos. What is even more beneficial is system your children can be a part of, too! I have found a few ways to store toys that help keep us organized that I want to share with you!

  • First, let’s see what we are working with! Bring all of your toys into one room and go through them. Purge any that are no longer played with, those that are broken or have missing parts and those that simply don’t bring your child (or you) joy. Donate what you can and trash the rest.

  • I have found if you keep every single toy, lego set, board game and teddy bear out and available at all times, children can easily be overwhelmed with the amount of choices they have and therefore can’t decide what to play with. It’s best to simplify their options so they can easily pick what activity they would like to do. If you have a large toy collection, I highly recommend a swap out system. Decide what you want to keep out right now, and store the rest away. Every 2-3 months, switch them out. When you pull out the Peppa Pig toys in a few months, they will seem brand new to your child.

  • Use different styles of storage for different kinds of items. What do I mean by this? We have all seen the very popular cube storage containers, or probably even own one (I know we do). While these are a great way to organize large sets or large objects, they don’t work so well for smaller toys. Utilize a cabinet, book case, or closet to house smaller clear plastic bins to keep tiny toys and smaller sets in order. The clear bins allow for your child to see what is inside each one to make picking out an activity easier.

  • Lidded baskets are a great item to keep around the house. Keep one in the living room to toss in any toys left behind at the end of the night.

  • Craft organizers help sort tiny pieces like legos, beads or puzzle sets. I use them to also store card games and puzzles!

  • Mesh zipper bags are my favorite way to store board games. It may seem weird to toss out the boxes they came in but it is such a huge space saver to ditch the boxes and store them in bags. I simply cut out the name of the game out of the box lid and tape it to the bag.
