A designated home office space was never at the top of our priority list.  We didn’t see a need for it, as David went to the office every day.   I had a desk in the corner of the playroom (sounds functional, right?) and inconveniently organized my items in random closets and drawers in the house.

Our tv room, adjacent to the living room, was almost exclusively used by the kids. Given that they have a playroom and individual bedrooms, we felt we could take this room back and they, hopefully, wouldn’t miss it!

Of course, I didn’t get started on this until after quarantine happened.  If I had known that was something on the agenda for 2020, I would have had the office done way before. When David began working from home, he had no other place to set up camp other than our dining room table. Ideal? Not by any means! Like many of you, we made use with what we had. With David now working from home in the foreseeable future, I knew I had to get my butt in gear and get the office space done.

The previous room design had moody color-block walls, a blue/gray on bottom (Boothbay Gray by BM to be exact) and Pure White by SW on the top.  Although I loved the design aspect of the color-blocking, I knew I wanted the office space to be bright and airy so painting was a must!

Now the fun part, making a mood board and creating a vision for the new space.

Signature pieces I knew I wanted for the space:

  • Large desk

  • Seating area

  • Hidden Storage

  • Light, airy and coastal space

After a substantial amount of trial and error on the mood board, this is where I ended up! But you will soon see, I strayed from this design just a little in the end. Mood boards are meant to guide your design so if you don’t stick to it fully, thats ok! Follow your gut!

My must-have design choices for the office were white walls and a wood desk. Simplicity at its best! I found this design by Studio McGee and it gave me all the feels! The desk was perfect but way out of my budget.  I especially loved the wood tone and the turned leg design, so I was determined to find a similar, budget friendly option. For my must have white walls, I decided to carry the Pure White color down and it gave the room a bright, fresh feel.

The rest of the design kind of came together naturally.  I found the most amazing scalloped credenza to accomplish my hidden storage goal. I paired this with a lakefront landscape print from Collection Prints. The landscape print had just the right tones for the overall vibe of the space. My print found a home in a beautiful gold frame from Frame it Easy to compliment the brass curtain rods.  These golden details tie together the elements of design that originated from my mood board. The neutral rug I selected demonstrates how simple design blends well with key pieces, like the mid-century modern comfy velvet chair I placed in the corner.  A large gray-washed mirror across from the windows helps to bounce the natural light coming in. I finished the space with light linen curtain panels and styled the space with faux greenery, wood accents and pottery pieces.

The details of this space make me think about the vacation we took last year to Maine and reminds me that it is possible to find our own getaway in the most unlikely corner of our home. Who knew a fresh coat of white paint was so underrated? What does your home office look like? Has it become your new favorite place? I’m sure David will never want to return to work now. Just as it’s important to take time for yourself during this time, reclaiming a space for yourself may be the change we all need right now.
