My most recent design was a big girl space for our youngest daughter as she was approaching the big 3. It was time to transition her from a crib to the infamous big girl bed. Although all that was needed was to swap the crib for a bed, I wanted to create a fresh room design that would be a space where Cora will grow and stay inspired.
Kissed with pink hues and rustic touches, her nursery was a light and playful space. While keeping the sweetness of my original design, I selected pieces that would grow with her in the next chapters of her life.
First things first, I painted the entire space Pure White by Sherwin Williams. I knew I wanted to add character to the space with board and batten. I decided to install two-thirds of the way up and run it all around the room. My friend Krystal from The Painted Cage did the B&B install for me. I had originally wanted to add wallpaper on the top half of the wall, but after sampling 10+ different designs, nothing shouted '“use me!” so I decided to keep the entire space white, which I’m not mad at!
When designing a space I tend to find one single item that I HAVE TO HAVE and then design the entire space around it. For Cora’s room, that one item was the whimsical, floral rug. I knew it would be perfect for her and ordered it right away. Sadly, I soon received an email from the manufacturer explaining the rug would be placed on a backorder due to a flaw in the printing of the rug. I was bummed thinking about the possibility I would have to find a new rug but knowing the company took extra steps to ensure I had a quality piece made it worth the wait. A few months later, the rug showed up unexpectedly at my door and I was thrilled. I mean look at it, it’s perfect, right?
A new dresser to store big girl clothes would unify design and experience. I found the perfect choice that pulls a mature color from the rug while adding texture to the space. The quality is amazing and best part, it came fully assembled! Win! It’s definitely a piece that will stay with her for the long run.
Adding final touches is my favorite part of curating a space. I styled the dresser and nightstand with pieces I already had. Shopping your home is the most budget-friendly way to freshen up a space! I then added a fun swing in the corner and a swing arm sconce above the nightstand. After committing to a single butterfly portrait, for now, my belief is that simplicity is key to a sufficient design.
Overall, I absolutely love the way the room turned out. More importantly, so did Cora! It’s the perfect spot for her to read and relax and a simply styled room to live and love for years to come.
